So what is a healthy diet for a child?
First things first, what exactly is a healthy diet for a child?
Variety is the simple answer. Getting your kids to eat a variety of foods, from fruits and veggies, to whole grains and proteins. The occasional dessert thrown in is also good!
What’s not great for kids? Eating the same thing over and over again.
No mom/parent shaming here- we have all been there.
We want our kids to eat healthy and be well rounded in their diets. But it is HARD. Especially when you have a picky eater.
How to get kids to eat healthy
You may have already tried a lot of things to make healthy eating easier on your child, but here are some basic tips and proven strategies in case you are feeling lost:
- Make healthy snacks what’s available. If healthy is all they have to choose from, they will soon get used to making healthy snack choices the norm.
- Get your kids involved in cooking AND cook more meals at home. I cannot stress enough how big this one is. Example: My 4 year old LOVES kale chips. Why? Because she makes them herself and calls it “her own” recipe. She is beyond proud of this yummy food that she can make herself.
- Focus on overall diet, not just specific foods. I.E if your kid hates broccoli with a passion- move on to something else that is just as beneficial. Don’t stress about one food.
What are the benefits for a kid who eats healthy?
Kids who have healthy diets grow into healthy adults. You know you want that for your child but what does that even entail besides veggies, veggies everywhere?
Your whole family will benefit from a more balanced family meal.
No more fighting through the process of getting your kid to eat their food.
No more anxiety about how you feel as a parent.
You’ll have a more relaxed environment and a trust between you and your child will be built that this is a healthy and happy place to be at the dinner table, something that will last even into adulthood.

How to get kids to eat healthy recipes and foods
The last bit of advice is to make meal times fun and get that healthy food actually tasting good.
Some healthy recipes that taste good…
- Sweet Potato Blueberry Muffins
- No Bake Lemon Oat Bites
- Healthy Fudge Brownies
- Mango + Aloe Smoothie
- Spinach Baked Egg Cups
Try sneaking in those healthy foods wherever you can. Chop the spinach up really small and throw it into the pasta. Get plain whole milk yogurt and just add a little honey. Throw whatever they won’t eat into a smoothie with some of their favorite fruits and call it ice cream.
Make meal times happy and stress free again!
You got this!
