Ok, so we jumped on this trend real fast because, well, it’s coffee and coffee is life. After experimenting quite a bit with different coffees and flavor combos we came up with our favorite whipped coffee recipe using maple syrup instead of granulated sugar. Made from a hazelnut or maple flavored instant coffee (Nescafe is our favorite to use in this recipe or in other baking with coffee recipes). We love ours over cold milk (oat milk is best for dairy free drinkers) and slightly mixed in with the whipped coffee. Basically, if you love coffee, you have got to try this recipe!
What is whipped coffee?
This whipped coffee recipe has become a viral sensation over night it seems and honestly, I can get on board. Coffee is in my veins at this point.
Whipped coffee (Dalgona coffee) is a creamy coffee made from instant coffee, sugar, and water. It, almost magically, whips up into a creamy coffee substance that you can put onto cold or hot milk. My preference is definitely cold milk but that’s because I love iced coffee.
The term “Dalgona” comes from the South Korean honeycomb toffee confection which has that same rich butterscotch color as the whipped coffee.
Trust me, this coffee will make you feel like you are in a cafe drinking a fancy coffee again.
Whipped Coffee without Sugar
Normally this Dalgona coffee is made with granulated sugar. BUT we decided to make it with maple syrup and it worked perfectly!
The original recipe is equal parts instant coffee, boiling water, and sugar. We added a little more maple syrup than just equal parts because it tasted better and whipped really nicely.
Our recipe calls for one extra tablespoon of maple syrup. The constancy is amazing, the flavor is on point, and it tastes great with cold or hot milk. We love our whole milk but oat milk or even, if you like it sweeter, some vanilla almond milk tastes super good.

Can you use regular grounds?
No, you can not use regular coffee grounds for this recipe. The chemical reaction that happens between the three ingredients is mainly because of the instant coffee properties. Using a direct substitute of regular coffee grounds doesn’t work.
Using a good instant coffee can make a big difference, though. A super cheap and bad quality instant coffee will taste more bitter than it should. Our favorite is the Nescafe hazelnut flavored instant coffee which they sell at most Targets or Walmarts.
how long does it take to whip?
This is actually a super quick recipe. The actual whipping process only takes about 2-3 minutes.
Starting on a low speed, gradually work your way up to one of the higher speeds as you see it start to thicken. This is actually made the exact same way that I make whipped cream, just different ingredients.
Once you can see that it is thick and whipped cream like, you can stop the beaters and scoop onto your milk of choice. It should make 2 nice cups.
Hope you enjoy this one as much as we did!
